Life, you take and you give,
you give and you take,
I confess that this time
it hurt a lot,
perhaps more than it should have
been able to hurt me,
to lose lips,
that a few days ago
did not exist in my thoughts
nor had I dreamed about them.
Did I really lose them?
But today, life,
my tears are not heresy,
I do not curse your paths.
I cry because this time
these twenty-five steps, more or less,
(who can count for so long?)
were in the direction of what
pleased me in every way.
I cry because I must cry,
not to bring back
what has been lost,
I cry because I feel,
because I still breathe.
And I know that never repeating that encounter
is a sad fact,
like few others.
But today,
even as everything that could have been
flows from my eyes,
I thank your paths,
cruel at times,
and at times,
sweet as a white fig
on an August afternoon
at my grandfather’s house
but always flowing forward,
without pauses,
without hesitation,
carrying me to where I must be.
Today, I see it clearly:
I am invincible,
I am stop only when I no longer breathe,
to lose and to win
are equal sides of the same coin,
that I do not forge who I am
if I always win.
I know I had a not so small part
in losing this time,
I know if I had kept silent,
today would be different,
but I do not desire the end nor do I surrender,
because you, only you,
take and give.
